In order to build student housing in Sweden it is required that the operator or housing company has complete coverage for the cost. There are no subsidies at all from the government to establish new housing for students at the moment. Until 2008 there were subsidies for the construction of different types of apartments, including student accommodation. But since the construction costs in Sweden are amongst the highest in Europe the construction of new student housing more or less stopped completely the last years.
